Home Aides of Rockland, Meals on Wheels Hosting Family Caregiver Workshops

The organizations are holding informational workshops for individuals taking care of senior or chronically ill family members

Are you a family caregiver for an aged adult or chronically ill individual? If so, then an upcoming series of workshops may be something that you may be interested in attending. Home Aides of Rockland and Meals on Wheels of Rockland will be presenting a series of workshops for family caregivers to the elderly, frail, and those coping with chronic illness and disability.

Both sponsoring organizations are dedicated to the well being of seniors and other homebound individuals in the community. Home Aides of Rockland has been active in the county since 1969 and serves an important role by helping individuals who, without that help, would likely have to move out of their homes. Meals on Wheels, as many know, delivers meals to homebound seniors and others who benefit from the service.

"Family caregivers need support," said Cecilia Halverson, Executive Director of Home Aides of Rockland. "It is very rewarding to take care of a family member, but also very stressful, both physically and emotionally. Being a caregiver is a very difficult job."

The workshop series, which is funded by the United Way of Rockland, actually had its very first session in December, however, there are three more left, with the next one coming up on this Saturday, January 8.  The schedule is as follows:

January 8, 2011: Caring For The Caregiver

February 12, 2011: Personal Care Basics

March 19, 2011: Community Resources For Caregivers & Nutrition Information

"At first we thought this would be for client caregivers," said Halverson. "But then we opened it up to the public."

The importance of the subject matter was the impetus for making this workshop available to public. In particular, the workshops will feature a special emphasis on safety, which is of crucial importance to both caregivers and those to whom care is being provided.

This Saturday's session will be held at the Meals on Wheels of Rockland facility at 121 West Nyack Road. Each workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and costs $10 to attend. Lunch will be provided.
