Letter to the Editor: Nanuet's MLK Day of Service

Jackie Cassagnol gathered a team of volunteers to collect data and assess Nanuet's community health January 2013

Martin Luther King (MLK) Day of Service project “Assessing Nanuet’s Community Health” was a huge success!

On Saturday January 19, Worldwide Community First Responder (WCFR) participated in the 2013 MLK Day of Service by assessing the health of the Nanuet community. Over 25 volunteers participated in our project and 200 surveys were completed, as we commemorated the life of Martin Luther King Jr. during a Day of Service. We thank our members, donors and volunteers for their support. The purpose of this project was to get opinions about community health problems in the Nanuet community.

Worldwide Community First Responder, Inc. will use the results of the surveys and other information to identify the most pressing problems which can be addressed through community action. A big "THANK YOU" goes out to Clem Yeboah, CPA who supported this event and allowed us to use his place of business, ATAX on Main Street in Nanuet.

We would also like to thank the Volunteer Center of United Way for helping find volunteers. Volunteers conducted short surveys of people along Main Street in Nanuet. The 10 minute survey includes questions on demographics and community health. Volunteers worked two shifts on Saturday, January 19, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Over 25 volunteers joined us for over 75 hours of service, and collected over 200 surveys!

We are very appreciative and thankful for our MLK Day of Service project volunteers. Our MLK Day of Service project volunteers won prizes for collecting the most community health assessment surveys on that cold winter day. Our MLK Day of Service prize winners were:

  • 1st Prize Winner - Jacqueline Boulan Romain
  • 2nd Prize Winner - Dr. Joseph Tacetta & Kyung Jung
  • 3rd Prize Winner - Jessa & Jenna Cooperman
Gift certificates for our prizes were donated by local businesses: Chili's and Stop & Shop. Some local businesses made food donations, while others provided gift certificates for our volunteers. Thank you to the following businesses:
  • Clem Yeboah, ATAX

  • Kelvin, Panera Bread
  • Rockland Bakery
  • Stop & Shop
  • 7-Eleven
  • Liz, Starbucks

We thank our Volunteer Center captain, Natalia Diaz, for being on site with us and managing the volunteers. Worldwide Community First Responder, Inc. will participate in the annual Nanuet Day event in the spring and organize a health fair. Data collected from our MLK Day of Service project “Assessing Nanuet’s Community Health” surveys will be used to focus on certain health topics. More photos from the day's event can be found here. Thanks for honoring the legacy and being a part of our Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service project!
