Nanuet Girl Scouts Give Back to Hi-Tor Animal Shelter

They Collected Donations for Cats/Kittens at Stop & Shop in Nanuet

Girl Scouts Heart of Hudson Troop 40016 was out in front of Stop and Shop Supermarket in Nanuet Saturday morning for a good cause.   The troop is working towards their Bronze Award and decided to collect donations for Hi-Tor Animal Shelter.

“The troop picked Hi-Tor because some of our members get their animals from the shelter and they wanted to give back to them,” said Troop Leader Fiona McNamara.

They were well prepared with flyers asking shoppers for:

  • dry kitten food
  • non-clumping cat litter
  • bleach, laundry detergent
  • dishwashing liquid soap
  • sponges
  • cleaning wipes
  • spray cleaners

“My family has two cats from Hi-Tor named Sonic and Shadow that are part of our family and we love them very much,” said Girl Scout Clare McNamara.

The Girl Scouts were able to collect a great deal of donations for Hi-Tor. As the girls gave out flyers to the shoppers more people came out with donations.  Many shoppers came out with various items from kitten food to sponges. The girls did a great job of getting the word out to help cats at Hi-Tor Animal Shelter.

“I’m glad to help Hi-Tor Animal Shelter," said Troop Member Sarah Koenig. "We have two cats at home and want to help other animals in the community.”

Brian Bradshaw, operations manager at Hi-Tor Animal Shelter, was extremely grateful to Girl Scout Troop 40016 for their donations.

“Kids have so much today," said Susan Koenig, Sarah's mother. "The Girl Scouts teaches them about needs in the world, about giving back to the community. The girls have become mature and have drive because of all the great activities the Girls Scouts offer them."

There has been an influx of kittens at Hi-Tor due to the lack of spayed and neutered cats. Bradshaw stressed education is key to letting people know about spaying and neutering your animals.

Scout Gabby Hawkins had a cat Poco which also came from Hi-Tor and Cassidy Dinkel has a cat named KC for Krazy Cat. The girls all love their cats and want to give back to the community.

“I have a lot of animals," said Girl Scout Stephanie Braziller. "I have two dogs, three cats, two guinea pigs and one rat. I love helping animals.”Many were very generous at Stop and Shop today.  Troop 40016 should be on their way to receiving their Bronze Award hopefully very soon.

Anyone interested in spaying or neutering your animal should contact Hi-Tor for information (845) 354-7000. The shelter welcomes all donations.  No donation is too small.
