Some Mini-Golf for the Highview Playground

"Together We Can—Again!"

Many families teed up for a good cause yesterday.

A Mini-Golf Fundraising event was held at Germonds Park in West Nyack, for the Highview Playground in Nanuet, which had been torn down last fall. There has been a committee hard at work since then raising funds to build a new park.

There were 110 people pre-registered on the lovely June evening after the event had been rescheduled due to last week's rain.

Councilman George Hoehmann—who is also on the steering committee for the playground—was at the entrance to the mini-golf course, greeting people as they walked in.

"We hope that we get over 125 to 150 people with walk-ins,"  he said, adding that Germonds Park is "one of the best hidden secrets in Parks and Recreation—it's a lovely place."

There were also T-shirts, brick pavers, glo-sticks and lanyards for sale, all spread out along a table being manned by Jim and James Lynn, Chris Haney and James Camillieri.

The children playing golf at the event all received certificates when they left the course.  Emma and TJ Lenks were very diplomatic.

"We didn't keep score." said Emma, when asked who won.

Several children in attendance were former students at Highview elementary school, and they reminisced about their favorite parts of the now-defunct playground.

"I remember all the secret hiding spots," said Emma McCabe.

Her brother Frankie added, "They had speakers! They were the best!" Their younger sisters Jessie and Kayla remember something different altogether

"I remember the tire swing, and the slide, and the black jumpy thing," said Jessie.

"It had tall towers you could hide in and see from," said Kayla.

President of the Steering Committee, Michelle Mazzaro, said that they had so far raised, "$56,000. And change!" to fund the playground reconstruction. The mini-golf event was planned by, "Sue Frisch—she's a first grade teacher at George Miller and the committee chair of the children's committee.

"She and George Hoehmann, who had done this before, came up with the idea, planned it, and put it all together," said Mazzaro. "We were hoping for $3,000 today."

In addition to the money from registration, which Hoehmann said he hoped would, "probably raise $300 - 400," there were 21 sponsors, all of whom donated $100 or more. The sponsors include:

  • Timothy Chhim from Allstate
  • Antonio Reda, Esq
  • (Who also provided the pizzas served at the event)
  • Christopher Carey
  • Jolene Cleaners
  • Ralph Sabatini
  • True Green Landscaping
  • Supervisor Alex Gromack
  • Concilman Frank Borelli
  • Councilman George Hoehmann
  • Councilwoman Shirley Lasker
  • Legislator Pat Moroney

The playground is anticipated to be built this October over Columbus Day Weekend.
