Cold Weather Profits #2

A follow up to the polar vortex story from a few weeks ago.

Some of the largest and most well known firms that can profit from the cold weather, snow, ice, and otherwise unpleasant time of year are as follows:

1) Vail – a publicly traded ski-resort
2) Compass Minerals – a supplier that produces a large percentage of the country’s rock salt
3) Johnson & Johnson – when people catch the cold and have aches and pains from shoveling these products go fly off the shelves
4) Generac – the generators company saw a spike after Hurricane’s Irene and Sandy, and the extreme weather usually benefits this firm
5) Columbia Sportswear – outdoor cold-weather clothing
6) Arctic Cat – snowmobile manufacturer

A few more general comments and ideas are as follows:

1) Firms that sell large amounts of cold weather gear such as Macy’s, Dicks Sporting Goods, and the “usual suspects” of Target and Wal-Mart

2) Companies that manufacture shovels, ice melt, and other cold weather products. All of the sales that have taken place now will not be reflected in earnings until a later date so this might be a good opportunity.

3) Utilities and natural gas firms – obviously, the colder it is the more heat people use the more that utilities and natural gas firms will benefit.

Bundle up, stay warm, and think of how to profit from the cold.
