Diane Sussman of Nanuet Wins Social Advocacy Award from Volunteer New York

Pictured are: Diane Sussman (second from left) of Nanuet, winner of the Social Advocacy Award (presented by M&T Bank), with her husband Robert, daughter Erika, and son Ari, at Volunteer New York!'s 34th annual Volunteer Spirit Awards at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Tarrytown, NY, on April 24.

Sussman was a founding member of the Rockland Family Shelter, now known as The Center for Safety and Change, 34 years ago, at a time when such services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault were unheard of in the County or around the country. A retired high school guidance counselor, Sussman spent her professional career enmeshed in issues concerning families and children. The passion born of that experience spilled over into a myriad of volunteer leadership roles of similar theme, all with a commitment to put strategies in place to end gender-based violence, raise awareness among women as to their rights and identify resources for the safety of themselves and their children.

Over the years, she has been deeply engaged in her community, as past president of the Rockland Chapter of NOW, volunteer counselor for VSC, Inc., and head of the social action committee of Beth Am Temple. But her focus has remained steadfast on the sustainability of the Center for Safety and Change and its programs.

In harsh economic times, the Center has suffered financially; staff has been reduced and satellite offices have closed. For the past sixteen years, Sussman has chaired the organization’s Fashion Sale, its successful fundraiser. Her can-do attitude, calm manner and organization skills have been singled out as essential ingredients to her success.  Her devotion and unselfish efforts are recognized by all who know her.
