Stop The Slaughterhouse

Public Demonstration
June 01, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.

Please join us for a demonstration on Sunday, June 1st at 2 p.m. to show our support for Assemblyman Zebrowski's efforts to get a $1.6 million state EDC grant rescinded for the construction of a New Square slaughterhouse.

New Square received a $1.6 million grant from New York’s Empire State Development fund to help build a slaughterhouse — despite the fact that the project has not received approval from the county or town-planning departments.

The proposed 26,000 square foot facility is right at the border of New Square, across the street from houses in the village of New Hempstead.

New Square is part of the town of Ramapo, which has some jurisdiction over New Square but New Square is also an incorporated village, which means that it has power over its zoning and municipal code and if given a State grant is likely to build the slaughterhouse despite the concerns of its neighbors.

Come to the site of the proposed construction to hear what your elected representatives have to say about this proposal. Demonstrate your opposition to a project which will cause a local ammonia smell and collapse property values throughout Rockland County.

1) State tax dollars should not be used to build a slaughterhouse in a residential area.

2) No zoning changes should be made that permit construction of a slaughterhouse.

Further details regarding speakers etc will follow in the coming weeks.
