Film, Gallery Focus on Transgender Rocklanders

VCS of Rockland sets up exhibit at Nyack Library; will screen movie

The main staircase in has served two purposes over the past several days.

One—as always—is to get folks to the second floor, where they can browse non-fiction or work overlooking the Hudson River.

But recently, it has also been transformed into a photo gallery that aims to educate Rocklanders on their transgender neighbors.

VCS of Rockland—founded in New City in 1970 to offer volunteer counseling and equality education—headed up the exhibit to raise awareness.

"Our community is challenged to authentically live up to our reputation as being a diverse community, welcoming and affirming of all," said Phyllis Frank, Assistant Executive Director of VCS Inc.

Frank said VCS, along with Gay Pride Rockland, has made leaps and bounds in mainstreaming the knowledge that gays and lesbians are part of our community. But transgender residents have yet to receive the acceptance and affirmation that they, like everyone else, warrant, Frank said.

Now, a handful of photos hang in the library stairwell, telling the story of transgender people, young and old, who live in every community nearby.

The photos will lead up to a film screening at the library on Sunday, March 11. Thy Will Be Done will be shown in the community room at 2 p.m., and followed by a reception.

"It's a slice-of-life movie about being transgender," Frank said. It focuses on a transgender woman seeking to become a Presbyterian pastor.

Thank you for bringing this to the community's attention! One small thing and sorry to be a stickler but I would rephrase the headline of this story, if you can. They are people who are transgendered not trangenders.

I agree. It's great that they are bringing this to the community's attention.
