MLK Day of Service on Saturday

There is still room to help at area volunteering opportunities in honor of Dr. King this weekend.

MLK Day is officially on Monday but this Saturday has been designated as a day to serve in his honor.

On January 19’s Day of Service, there are 20 projects at more than 20 agencies around the area with slots for over 400 volunteers to take part in activities.

Many of these slots have been filled, but there is still time to sign up for activities in:

  • Nanuet: Access Community Health – Worldwide Community First Responder, Inc.
  • Yonkers: Cards for Veterans and More program
  • Online: “Be a Voice for Kids in Your Community”
  • Pleasantville through the 20th: DVD Drive for Veterans at the Jacob Burns Film Center - comedies and action movies preferable.
  • The Volunteer Center of the United Way in Tarrytown has orchestrated a whole webpage of volunteering options.

From The Volunteer Centers’ blog on Patch by Amie Getis:

Despite his death in 1968, the legacy of Dr. King still resonates in 2013 for it was a senseless act of violence that brought an early end to a life which fought for increased opportunity for all Americans.

For Dr. King and all those who made the sacrifice, The Volunteer Center offers service as a force to bridge economic and social divides, providing us with an opportunity to join neighbors and local leaders to tackle community challenges.

"Obviously, we’re thrilled that we’re almost fully subscribed," Getis said, adding that there's always opportunties to volunteer.

And on Sunday, Jan. 20 there's "America’s Sunday Supper," a nationwide opportunity to bring civic discourse into the home. The website supporting those who are doing it is: pointsoflight.org/mlk/host-americas-sunday-supper

After MLK Day, the center will have "Valentines and Volunteers."  Stay tuned for more info on that.

This is just ridiculous. There are two aspects to our water. Supply and demand. United WaterRead More control our supply and have been instructed by the NY Public Service Commission to increase our supply. Our politicians control our demand. They could enact legislation to restrict demand tomorrow: Introduce water saving measures, restrict growth and introduce incentives and policies to conserve, but do they? No, of course not, they would rather showboat and slam UW, who are doing what the State has mandated. If our local politicians are serious on this issue, propose real legislation and water conservation measure, not just baseless rebuke of UW.
