Grand Opening Of 24 Hour Fitness On Saturday

The 45,000 square feet of the brand-new 24 Hour Fitness offers high ceilinged workout rooms with walls of windows.

Club Manager Jeff Peel said the design is beneficial.

“The natural light is positive for people,” he said. “It just feels better when there’s natural light.”

The spacious facility is one of the junior anchors at The Shops At Nanuet. It is considered a Super Sport club because of its amenities. It features a 25-meter, three lane pool; Kids Club program; functional and strength training areas; locker rooms with steam rooms and saunas and a full size basketball court with six hoops on the first level. Upstairs, there are rows of cardio equipment, a black lit spin room with more than 30 pieces of equipment and a group exercise room.

“We want to make sure it is a club different from any club in the area,” said Peel on Tuesday. “We’re here to help people succeed in fitness.”

Peel said functional training focuses on helping people with everyday movements and activities that may be difficult such as carrying a baby, lifting a suitcase or reaching for items.  Club members work with one of the more than 15 personal trainers on staff.

The human element is important in fitness said Peel. He explained that people find it helpful to map out their personal fitness goals with someone else who will work with, guide and encourage them.

He said the strength training section is unique for the line of ergonomic equipment such as the Hoist Rocit, which helps people complete a perfect rep.  TRX suspension training equipment has long, flexible straps that people pull in different directions while using their body weight to exercise.

“It’s really a cool way to gauge your strength without doing weights,” said Peel.

In addition to the large windows, people can watch three television screens, which will display a variety of sports and other programming.  Motivational phrases appear throughout the club, “Make A Difference,” “Conquer All Your Goals,” and “Push Your Limits.”

The junior sized Olympic pool and nearby Whirlpool have wheelchair access. The pool will be open with lifeguards on duty Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The separate Kids Club is designated for children from six months old to 11 years old. It has lots of open floor space as well as an enclosed area for non-walkers, 10-foot tall walls made of netting surround a mini basketball court and soccer net.

The Adaptive Movement Trainer in the cardio section works off kinetic energy. Peel said each person decides how they want to use it whether for running, hiking or for their arms. More than 80 group classes, including Body Combat and Zumba, are scheduled each week. Most weekdays the first class is at 5:30 a.m. and the last class starts at 8:30 p.m. Weekend morning classes begin at 8 a.m.

The Toronto, Canada native said the center is opening with 80 employees but he expects the number will increase to about 100.

Membership fees are charged on a monthly basis from $55 to $70 and include access to 24 Hour Fitness’ 400 facilities across the country. 24 Hour Fitness officially opens at 6 a.m. on Saturday.
