IBEW Local 363 Backs United Water's Hudson River Desalination Project

Union contends project will create jobs, help water supply.

The said today that the union is supporting 's plan for a West Haverstraw plant to treat Hudson River water to bolster the drinking water supply in Rockland County.

“Quite simply, Rockland is facing a water shortage,” said Sam Fratto, Business Manager for IBEW Local 363.  “United Water’s project will bring much needed purified drinking water to the county.  This is a positive step for the future of Rockland County.  It will also create hundreds of job opportunities in many related fields.”

United Water is currently operating a pilot facility in West Haverstraw, testing different methods for treating water from the Hudson River. The treatment is designed to remove salt and other materials from the water.

“The Governor has said New York is open for business—and the Haverstraw Water Supply Project is good for business, good for Rockland and good for New York,” said Fratto.  “This project is critical to jump start the local economy and get hundreds of New Yorkers back to work.  We should all support the Governor and help New York get back on the right track.”

In addition to job opportunities, IBEW Local 363 said it supports the Haverstraw Water Project because:

  • Water purified at the pilot facility meets all health and safety standards. The purification process is based on good science.
    • United Water is using the best technology to purify the water and protect the river.
    • The Haverstraw Water Supply Project is the most cost effective option and best all around solution.

“The approval of this project will benefit Rockland County by creating jobs and supplying us with clean, safe water,” Fratto said.
