New national statistics show employers added 103,000 jobs in September, more than expected.

New jobs came in the healthcare, professional and business services industries. However, state and local governments across the country continued to cut jobs. Also, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said the increase in employment partially reflected the return to payrolls of about 45,000 telecommunications workers who had been on strike in August.
