Valentine's Day: What Non-Rose Flowers To Buy

A look at some types of flowers to pick up besides going with the traditional roses

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, many will be making trips to a local florist to pick up some flowers. Arguably the most popular flowers on Valentine’s Day are roses.

Patch is here to give you some other ideas for flowers to pick up for the holiday besides roses.

- 510 Piermont Avenue, Piermont - 845-359-1411

Owner Lynn Aubrey said there’s a wide variety of flowers you can pick up for a loved one for Valentine’s Day that aren’t roses from her store.

Some of her suggestions were tulips, ranunculus, cymbidium orchids and anemone.

She said they’re also offering a special for the holidays on orchids, where you can buy a white orchid that comes in a red pot for $20. Aubrey said they also have a lot of scents, jewelry and other gifts.

Joe Trotta, manager, said if you’re looking for something besides roses, Bassett offers a variety of different colored gerbera daisies. They’ve got pink and red, along with a few other colors as well.

Hybrid lilies are another popular option, Trotta said, adding they’ve also got a lot of deals on different arrangements for the holiday, including arrangements in a cube starting at $39.99.

Owner Glenn B. Weiser said his shop has a number of different options for non-rose flowers. He’s got a large number of lilies that will pop over the weekend, making them nice and fresh for the holiday.

He also said he’s got a nice selection of hybrid lilies, including sorbonnes, stargazers and Casablancas.

Weiser said carnations are good for Valentine’s Day, as are tulips, which they have from Holland and California.

“We prefer the domestic ones, though,” he said. “Keep it in the country.”

If you’re looking for something besides roses as well as something to eat, Edible Arrangements is your place. April Olander, assistant manager, said they’ve got a new arrangement for the holiday called the Sweetheart Swizzle Bouquet. That comes with chocolate-covered strawberries with white drizzle arranged in a red mug.

They’ve also got a lot of fruit designs, including pineapple-shaped hearts. You can get those in one fruit basket that comes with honeydew, cantaloupe, strawberries and grapes.

Olander said that around this time of year their boxes that come with varied kinds of dipped fruit, like strawberries, apples and more, are very popular. She also said they can do same-day orders if you’re running a bit late on Valentine’s Day as long as you place the order early enough in the morning, which will depend on how busy they get on the actual day.
