Exercise Yields Physical and Mental Benefits For Seniors

Everyone from the ages of 5-95 should incorporate exercise in their daily routine. Seniors, in particular, can gain great deal, both mentally and physically from being active.

In addition to keeping body weight down, there are many advantages to staying fit. In particular, aerobic exercise strengthens the heart and cardiovascular system, improving oxygen delivery to the body’s cells and vital organs.  A major concern, as one ages, is the decrease in lean muscle mass and the loss of strength.  The simple implementation of resistance training can offset this decrease, along with strengthening joints, improving posture and joint range of motion, and allowing for greater ease of movement. Regular physical activity also enhances overall balance which reduces the number of broken bones that result from the sudden slips and falls that are common amongst seniors.

New research has uncovered these little known facts about exercise benefits: regular activity by older adults can increase wound-healing time by up to twenty-five percent and reduce periodontal disease- the main cause of missing teeth.

Stemming from a healthy body, a healthy mind emerges.  Mentally, physical activity can do wonders.  The flow of oxygen to the many bodily organs ultimately results in improved brain function; this means better memory and less frustration.  Along with the ability to maintain independence comes peace of mind, and a sense of self sufficiency.  Healthy seniors can prepare meals, and perform other basic daily tasks without difficulty.  The worries of sudden loss of balance and injury are greatly reduced, which is comforting to everyone.  The endorphins that result from working out can help ward off depression as well as decelerate mental decline.

Some senior friendly workouts that get the heart pumping include walking, biking, mowing the lawn, and even climbing stairs.  There is no age limit in obtaining a lean, strong body, and by using tools such as stretch bands, wrist weights, or a pair of light weights, it is achievable.  Tai Chi is also a great way to work out; it helps keep joints flexible and its repetitive motions can be helpful for people with memory problems.
