HSRC "Walk through History": Ringwood Manor & Long Pond Ironworks

The Historical Society of Rockland County

invites you to join us for a Ringwood Manor & Long Pond Ironworks Walk through History

Date: Saturday, July 12, 2014, rain or shine
Time: Meet at Ringwood Manor parking lot at 9:30 am (manor tour starts promptly at 10 am)
Where: Ringwood State Park, 1304 Sloatsburg Road, Ringwood, NJ
Cost: Bring $3 for admission to Ringwood Manor and $7 per car for out-of-state parking.Carpooling is encouraged. Also bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the Ringwood Manor grounds or at Long Pond Ironworks

The focus of this "Walk through History" is the newly restored and reopened Ringwood Manor, the home of the Cooper-Hewitt family who made their 19th-century fortune in iron mining and manufacturing. Although the operations were in New Jersey, Abram S. Hewitt was a Rockland County native: he was born and raised in Haverstraw, and his mother was a member of the Gurnee family.

Guests will enjoy a guided tour of Ringwood Manor’s interior (approx. one hour), followed by a self-guided tour of the grounds. Participants who plan to end the day here can take advantage of the beautiful picnic areas at Ringwood State Park.

Those who want to continue can proceed by car (approx. three miles) to Long Pond Ironworks State Park in Hewitt, NJ. Interior and outdoor space will also be available to eat a picnic lunch there, and anyone who is interested can join HSRC Executive Director Susan Deeks for an afternoon tour of the historic ironworkers' village and blast furnace remains. There are no fees for parking or for museum admission at Long Pond Ironworks, although donations are welcome.

Due to limits on the size of tour groups at Ringwood Manor, registration will be capped at 30-35 people (first come, first served) for this Walk through History. Reservations are required.
