Who is Uncle Tom?: An Uncle Tom's Cabin Book Discussion

Who is Uncle Tom?

Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1852, in support of abolitionism.  Abraham Lincoln is said to have credited Stowe with with helping to start the Civil War.  Her character, Uncle Tom, endured abuse to spare fellow slaves and demonstrated kindness in the face of his masters' cruelty.  How, then, did Uncle Tom become known as a traitor to his race?  Read the book to find out who he really was.  Librarian Julie Marallo will lead a discussion of the novel, its influence on ending American slavery, and the many ways its characters have been distorted in popular culture.
