Guidelines in Choosing the Right Summer Opportunities for Your Child –Tip #7

Top 10 topics to discuss when choosing the right summer opportunity for your child continues with tip# 7 (camper needs)

Choosing the right summer opportunity for your child is a process. In addition to finding a program that is programmatically stimulating and has a proven safety record, taking into consideration the needs of each individual child is important.  Not every program is the best fit for each individual.

Take the time to understand your child and to evaluate what type of summer program environment will bring the most success to them. Understandably, having these conversations with program directors can be challenging. Topic Tip # 7 gives you some pointers.

Want more pointers? I’ll be at the Summer Trails Booth at the Crowne Plaza Camp Fair (White Plains) this Sunday Feb. 5 (www.westchestercampfair.com). I look forwards to talking with you.

Topic Tip #7

Sensitivity to Camper Needs- Understand the training given to staff regarding camper needs including diversity training, behavior management, position on bullying, and navigating friendships.

Additionally, if your child has a special need (i.e. allergy, ADD, ADHD, Aspergers, a physical limitation) be up front and open with the director. Ask about the camp’s ability to meet your child’s specific needs.
