Mary Peterson: West Nyack #1 Senior Citizens Club Charter Member

Mary F. Peterson (née Flatley) died peacefully, surrounded by family on May 21, 2014.

She will be dearly missed.

She was born on October 15, 1919, in Hudson, NY, and spent her formative years in Lynbrook, NY. During WWII, she was a corporal in the Women's Army Corps where she served as an assistant in the flight surgeon's office at Newcastle Army Air Base in Wilmington, DE.

After the war, she worked as a secretary to the Chief Medical Officer at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, where she met her husband, Matthew C. Peterson. She was a homemaker in the Bronx until her children were grown and then worked as a receptionist at various regional banks in NY until her retirement.

In 1983, Mary moved with her husband to Normandy Village in Nanuet, NY. They were charter members of the West Nyack #1 Senior Citizens Club.

She is survived by four of her five children, Nona F. Maher and her husband, Tom, of Upper Saddle River, NJ; Mary A. Peterson and her husband, Lynn Nadel, of Tucson, AZ; Susan M. Peterson of Princeton, NJ; and Matthew T. Peterson and his wife, Angie, of Richmond, VA; as well as by 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Nona Moore, of Troy, OH. She was predeceased by her husband, Matthew, daughter Christine, and by her brother Thomas W. Flatley.

Family and friends may visit the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home on Friday, May 23rd between 2 and 4 pm and between 7 and 9 pm. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Saturday, May 24th at The Church of The Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Villa Marie Claire Hospice (www.villamarieclaire.org).
