Hudson Valley Honor Flight -Thanking WW II Vets

Boy Scout Troop 97 New City, has been asked to participate in The Hudson Valley Honor Flight project.

We are aiming to send 1,097 cards and letters of thanks to World War II veterans.

This is a very special, worthy and honorable project and one that we all should be excited to be part of giving thanks to the veterans.

I greatly appreciate your help in this great project.

I also ask if you would share the following rundown of this project.  The more information we can get out there via social media the better chance we can get more cards for these deserving veterans.

The following is a run down of this worthwhile World War II project.

Hudson Valley Honor Flight is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to this mission. We are presently serving veterans from all the areas serviced by the Hudson Valley Council, BSA. The WWII Memorial was not completed until the end of 2004, well past the traveling days of many of these vets. The Honor Flight provides the flight, food, and transportation for this day of remembrance. From the send off in the early morning at Stewart Airport to the surprises along the way, it is a full day for everyone on board the flight.Highlights include a trip to The Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery, and, of course, a visit to the World War II Memorial itself. On the flight home, vets are treated to a few surprises, topped off by their homecoming at Stewart Airport.

But Hudson Valley Honor Flight has a secret, and this is where you can help. After a day of camaraderie and reminiscence, these veterans think that their day is over. But waiting for them, on the flight home, is the sound of: "MAIL CALL!" the same call that kept their spirits alive during the war.  We ask families, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to write thank you letters to the veterans. However, many have little or no family, may live in a nursing home, and have few friends or neighbors left.  We want to insure that each veteran gets a packet of mail.

THIS IS WHERE WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP.

We ask that you write letters or cards to these veterans to thank them for their service. The letters/cards  will be bundled with letters from other volunteers, other local school children, and elected officials. We have received many, many "thank you" notes from veterans that say that "Mail Call" was the highlight of their trip.
