Former Bedford Hills Corrections Officer Charged With Rape of Inmate

New York State Police report on July 7, 2014 they charged Richard Rodriquez, a former corrections officer with the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, with the rape of a female inmate.

Rodriquez, 33, of Brooklyn, New York, was suspended on May 6, 2014 from the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility after an investigation revealed that in December of 2013, he engaged in sexual contact with a female inmate.

New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation from the Somers barracks investigated the incident and charged Rodriquez with Rape in the 3rd Degree, a Class E Felony.  The joint investigation was conducted by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, DOCCS Inspector General’s Office, and the New York State Police.

Rodriguez was arraigned on July 7, 2014 before the Town of Bedford Court and released on $500 cash bail. He is due in the Town of Bedford Court on September 4, 2014.

It must be quite a day for a male in a female prison. Hard to imagine what goes on in there!

$500 bail for rape is ridiculous. Should have been $50K at least. I am assuming (hoping} it was a typo by patch? Anyhow hats off to the NY troopers for nailing this scumbag.

Unfortunately, bail isn't set because of how we "feel" about a crime. It's not to be used as a punishment. It's only used to ensure a defendants return to court. Past criminal history, community ties, employment, residency and warrant history mostly make up the criteria. If serious mental health issues could be related to a crime, that too may play a role as well.

Nice reporting. Is he a "former Corrections Officer"? He was suspended May 6 - is he still on the payroll? Is he suspended with or without pay until Sept 4. Let's see... be convicted of a Class E Felony for Rape in the 3rd Degree or lose $500 and hit the road. That's a gimme if I ever saw one...
