The Hoyts Face Felony Charges over Copper Pipe

Police say Kevin Hoyt from Valley Cottage and Kenneth Hoyt from Nanuet caused more than $50,000 in damage to the air conditioning units located on the roof of 20 N. Middletown Road in Nanuet.

The two 30-year-olds were arrested July 18, shortly after 3 p.m., after a Clarkstown police unit on patrol observed two men on the roof top of a vacant building.

Police say the two had climbed onto the roof, using a ladder, to dismantle several air conditioning units.

Investigation showed the air conditioning units were cut in such a way as to remove the copper piping found inside. Police believe the copper piping was then going to be traded in for cash at a scrap metal business.

The Hoyts were both charged with criminal mischief 2nd (felony), possession of burglar’s tools, petit larceny (both misdemeanors), and trespass (violation).  They were arraigned in Clarkstown Justice Court before Judge Ugell.  Kevin received $1,500 bail and Kenneth received $4,500 bail.  Both are due back in court on July 21, 2014.
