Gas Leak Shuts Section Of Main Street in Nyack

Truck hits gas service connection to building.

A gas leak apparently caused by a truck hitting a building's gas service connection has a section of Main Street in Nyack closed to traffic and has forced the evacuation of at least six downtown buildings.

Volunteers from the Nyack Fire Department and crews from Orange and Rockland Utilities are at the scene of the gas break at 163 Main St., Didier Dumas Patisserie.

The gas leak was reported at around 9:30 a.m. after a truck struck a gas service line. Nyack firefighters described the break as having caused a major leak. The leak forced the evacuation of Didier Dumas Patisserie as well as buildings next to it and behind it.

No one was reported injured in the incident. Main Street is closed from Franklin Street to Midland Avenue as emergency workers attempt to cut off the gas leak.

I was there seconds after it happened and you could hear the gas leaking out from twenty feet away. I hope O & R fixes it soon. As of 1:15 that section of main street was still closed. My only real regret was that I missed my morning cup of coffee from Dider.

This looks like the exact location of the gas line break from several years back when that runaway moving truck with no breaks wiped out a row of cars and then broke a gas line. The Coven restaurant had been sold and was under going renovations and was torched and destroyed in that blaze. I believe it was an O&R guy who just happened to be in the area who ran over and shut off the gas. They reported if it had gone unchecked that the whole of Main Street may have blown up. It's very bizarre that this is the exact same spot as the last incident!
