L.I. Man Arrested on Gun Possession Charge in Nyack

Second time he's hit with felony charge in less than a week.

A Long Island man was sent to the Rockland County jail for a second time in less than a week after he was charged with illegal gun possession on Saturday in Nyack, according to Orangetown Police.

Daniel T. Sullivan, 55, of Central Islip, was arrested after town police officers investigated a report of a man with a gun at the Best Western motel at Route 59 and Polhemus Street in Nyack, Lt. Anthony Mercurio said. Just five days earlier, Sullivan was charged with felony drunken driving a block away in the lot of the Walgreens store at Route 59 and Route 9W.

Mercurio said Sullivan was spotted walking to a convenience store in Nyack at about 5:22 p.m. and he was stopped based on a description of the man who reportedly had a gun. Sullivan, according to police, admitted having a loaded handgun in his room at the Best Western.

A loaded .357 magnum revolved was found in Sullivan's room along with additional ammunition, Mercurio said. Sullivan was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a deadly weapon, a felony, and at arraignment he was ordered held in the Rockland County Correctional Facility in New City pending a Dec. 7 hearing.

Last Monday, Sullivan was arrested at Walgreens after police recieved a complaint about an intoxicated person.

Police said town officers found Sullivan at Walgreens at 3:31 a.m. in a 2000 Honda Civic, with the keys in the ignition, the engine running and the transmission set for drive. Police said Sullivan was told to shut down the car and get out.

Sullivan, police said, appeared intoxicated and failed field sobriety tests. He later failed a chemical breath test for alcohol, police said.

Sullivan was charged with driving while intoxicated as a felony because of a previous conviction within the past 10 years, and he was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated. After that incident he had been ordered held in the county jail pending a hearing.

JC: This arrest does not appear to have anything to do with the village's late-night culture. Police say the man was staying at the Best Western.
