Police: Drugs Distributed by Pearl River Man Led to Fatal Overdose

Defendant Craig Oleksowicz faces possible life in prison.

A Pearl River man has been charged with the illegal distribution of the drug oxymorphone—a pain reliever—that led to the fatal overdose of a 21-year-old Pearl River man in October of 2011, authorities said.

Craig Oleksowicz, 37, was arrested and charged with a slate of drug offenses, law enforcement officials said today. Oleksowicz faced U.S. Magistrate Judge George A. Yanthis in court Thursday morning.

"As alleged, the defendant was essentially an outlaw pharmacy, and worse, a lethal one," Yanthis said. "The illegal dealers of prescription drugs will not get any easier treatment from this office simply because what they are selling can be legally used when properly prescribed."

Oleksowicz is accused of peddling a slew of drugs—including codeine, methadone and Valium—which led to the 2011 death.

"It was sad for me to see a young man from my own neighborhood in Orangetown die as a result of being illegally sold a prescription narcotic substance," said Orangetown Police Department Chief Kevin Nulty. "The death was very real to me."

Authorities allege Oleksowicz continued to illegally distribute pills after the fatal overdose.

If found guilty, Oleksowicz faces between of 20 years and life in prison, and a fine up to $1 million or twice the gain or loss resulting from the illegal sales.

The buyer and user is just as guilty in this story. This "kid" isn't dead if he didn't use drugs. The parents are also at fault. They lost control of this situation a long time ago. They only pushed for an arrest to scapegoat the blame they feel as failing parents. Why not mention the " kid's" name? I believe it is to spare these parents, and I use that word loosely any more embarrassment.

Ben Dover... That's very clever... First, his name is Billy Raftery and he was an amazing 21 year old "kid". I would know since I am his older sister. Why don't you mention your own name rather than using an alias like the COWARD you are BEN DOVER. As for my parents... If you must know, since you felt the need to insult them 6 months after this article was written, my beautiful mother died of colon cancer in 2002 at the age of 44, Billy was 12. My dad, is a hard worker and gave us everything and a beautiful life. There was over 600 people at Billy's wake. Waiting in the rain to see him one last time... How many people would be at yours BEN DOVER??

I lost both my parents when I was fourteen...I didn't turn to drugs. The only thing I got from your comment is I can not count on you to be at my wake.
