Pursuit on I-684; Stolen Makeup; False Alarms

Here's a look at some of this week's top police and fire news from Patch sites across the Hudson Valley.

Pursuit on Interstate 684

A 35-year-old Bronx man who ignored a state trooper's lights and sirens Saturday morning led police on a chase through parts of Northern Westchester, officials said.

The 11:30 a.m. incident began when police attempted to stop a white Infiniti SUV for traveling at 89 mph on Interstate 684 in Bedford. Instead of pulling over the driver accelerated to "speeds in excess of 100 mph," according to authorities.

"A second state trooper joined in on the pursuit going northbound on I-684," police said in a statement. "The operator of the SUV drove erratically through all lanes of travel, including the shoulder of the center median. The fleeing motorist exited I-684 at exit 6A in Golden’s Bridge, where the pursuit was continued by Lewisboro PD officers. The pursuit then continued on Route 22 into the Town of North Salem, where the operator lost control and struck [a] cement pillar."

Anthony Powell was taken into custody and charged with several traffic violations, misdemeanor second-degree reckless endangerment and felony first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation. The latter is because he has more than 20 suspensions on his license. He was arraigned and sent to Westchester County Jail on $2,500 cash bail.

Police: Driver, Passenger Share Order of Protection, Drug Charge

State police arrested a 28-year-old White Plains woman and a 28-year-old Yonkers man on the Sprain Brook Parkway in Mount Pleasant after they found pot and heroin in the car. Investigation revealed a stay-away order of protection against him, naming her as the protected party, according to authorities. Unneccessary Calls Plague Rockland Firefighters

A third of the calls volunteer firefighters responded to in Rockland County between 2009 and 2012 were unnecessary false alarms, officials told Patch. That means wasted money, lower morale, complacency and more. Human error is to blame in many cases, as is malfunctioning equipment. Get the story here.
