Spring Valley Fire Department Quickly Puts Out Apartment Building Fire

No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported

The Spring Valley Fire Department was alerted by an automatic alarm at the Spring Valley Commons in the village and arrived around 2 p.m. Friday afternoon to find a fire blazing through the roof of Building D.

Spring Valley Fire Chief Larry Bolson called in assistance from the Hillcrest and Monsey fire departments. Rockland County’s Fire and Emergency Coordinator Gordon Wren said firefighters from Spring Valley and Monsey went into the building and knocked down the fire within 20 minutes.

“They kind of made it look easy even though it wasn’t,” Wren said.

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.

There were a few smaller side fires that Wren said were put out in about 45 minutes.

Bolson said in some instances fire alarm systems are triggered without actual fires, but this time wasn’t such a case.

“The fire alarm system worked,” he said. “It did what it was supposed to do.”

Bolson said they also called in Spring Hill Emergency Medical Services and Rockland Paramedics.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, and Bolson said the building operator is working to turn the heat, gas and electric back on in Building D, except for the apartments where the fire was.
