Spring Valley Woman Charged In $17,000 Food Stamp Scheme

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe said Betty Bourguignon, 38, of Spring Valley was arrested and arraigned on charges of receiving more than $17,000 in food stamps and other government assistance under false pretenses.

Zugibe said on Tuesday “Bourguignon, a recipient of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) and other public assistance, falsely reported that she was unemployed, when she was, in fact, working for Creston Electronics of Bergen County, New Jersey.”

She was charged with one count of Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree, a class “D” Felony and could face up to seven years in state prison if convicted.

Bourguignon allegedly received $17,422.50 in government assistance benefits between September 2011 and October 2012. An investigation by the Rockland County District Attorney's Office Special Investigations Unit and the Rockland County Department of Social Services led to her arrest on July 22. She was arraigned in the Town of Ramapo Justice Court and was released on her own recognizance. Bourguignon is scheduled to appear in court on July 30.
