Suspicious Man Reported at Elementary School in Nanuet

Yesterday afternoon and again in the evening, a man was reported on Church Street or in the wooded area near Highview Elementary School in Nanuet.

A counselor at the "after hours" program at the school called Clarkstown police at 5:30 p.m. May 5 to report a suspicious male walking around the school grounds.

The program counselor told the officers that an unknown male in his 40s, who had dark, receding hair, was wearing a plaid shirt and carrying a neon-colored stick or cane, was standing on the sidewalk that runs along the rear field fence line at the school.

He apparently was saying “come here, kids."

The program counselor told police none of the children at the school had any contact with the man, who had left. Patrol units canvassed the area but were unable to find him. Police said he never stepped foot on school property.

School officials this morning said all the gates and doors of the school are locked and being monitored.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information about it is asked to call the Clarkstown Police at 845-639-5800.

Clarkstown police said the incident did not appear to be related to the report of a man trying to lure a child into a car in West Nyack April 21.
