Unusual Suspects: Burnt Steak; Bomb Threat Feared; Motorcycle Chase Ends in Fatality

Recent weird and unusual crimes in the Hudson Valley. Reports do not indicate a conviction.

Smoke conditions set off alarms at the Mountainside Apartments in Garnerville on Saturday afternoon and the building was evacuated. The cause: a burnt steak. Occupants were back in the building within 20 minutes.

A chase that started on the Tappan Zee Bridge and ended in Yonkers resulted in a fatality when a motorcyclist crashed into a police car. According to police, a state trooper was assaulted on the bridge and four Yonkers police offers were injured while making an arrest. Two motorcyclists who led police on a chase lost control of their bikes in Yonkers and one put up a struggle during his arrest, which is when four police officers were injured. A third motorcyclist fled the scene and was in an accident with a marked Yonkers Police patrol car; he was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

Patterson Town Hall employees called police when they believed a man was acting oddly and might have been in possession of a bomb. A man who had apparently expressed discontent over local government entered the town hall with a briefcase and locked himself in the bathroom for an extended period of time. Witnesses say he exited without the the briefcase and employees discovered ceiling tiles had been displaced, leading them to believe the man might have stowed the briefcase in the ceiling and it might have had a bomb. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

A woman was arrested while visiting an inmate of the county jail in New City for allegedly trying to smuggle in marijuana. The woman apparently attempted to give the inmate a pouch of marijuana, matches and cigarette rolling papers.

Lightning struck a Purchase home and caused an attic fire that has temporarily displaced a family. The homeowners were home at the time of the incident. A neighbor alerted the family of the fire. A firefighter suffered a minor injury to his leg when he slipped inside the home.

A Pleasantville man, 59, was arrested after detectives determined he had filed a false robbery report. The man told police that his place of employment,  on Pleasantville Road, had been robbed and described the alleged thieves to police. The man also told Patch he had been pushed during the alleged incident. Police have charged the man with Falsely Reporting an Incident in the Third Degree and Larceny in the Fourth Degree.

A 14-year-old Dobbs Ferry boy received a text message from a 19-year-old male telling the boy to kill an acquaintance. The 19-year-old was apparently retaliating against the boy because of a previous dispute and the threats were deemed not credible.

A woman, 50, was arrested for stealing $17 in cold cuts from the Dobbs Ferry Stop & Shop.

Ossining Police are investigating a resident's claim that he was scammed by a man selling a car on Auto Trader. Apparently, the Ossining resident agreed to purchase a 1961 Impala and was told by the alleged seller to wire money through Google Wallet so the car would be shipped. After the Ossining man wired the money he was unable to get in touch with the seller. The victim also discovered that Google Wallet does not accept wire transfers and the car was still listed for sale on Auto Trader.

As usual with the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Patch, not a single police report from the two towns supposed to be represented on the site. This site has become a joke.

I'm sorry Johan I do not see where any of the above stories concerned Larchmont/Mamaroneck. Maybe I do not know these town as well as I think.

Hi Johan,
"Unusual Suspects" is a compilation of strange police incidents from the entire Hudson Valley; the list doesn't always include incidents from Larchmont/Mamaroneck. Stay tuned for this week's police blotter coming up tomorrow. Best, Stefani Kim

An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands. Haverstraw bay reclassified as drinking water will better protect it, provide an endless supply of water and finally help end the stereotype of the Hudson being polluted Recommend

UW is by far the cheapest utility we have delivering clean water to my family for over 35 years. IRead More can live without cable which costs $160 a month but not without water at about $50 a month. Thank you Mr. Pointing.

Mr. Pointing, I appreciate your clearing this matter up. Too often the Water Company s cast as theRead More Villian by the Press and it is best to nip it in the bud with true facts.

I see your point isnt so much about what they are spending it on, but the process that they followedRead More to get to this point, but are they getting generators for the street lights on main street or the traffic signals? Seems like a project that is way out of control, who has gone to these community centers during storms anyway. All I have ever read about was people charging cell phones at the community centers. Good Job Pat.
