Hurricane Sandy’s Legacy - Power Outages And Downed Trees In Clarkstown

More than 300 downed trees reported in town, travel restrictions in place till 6 p.m.

Clarkstown Town Supervisor Alex Gromack said the town was spared from flooding by Hurricane Sandy.  But it is dealing with massive power outages and 300 reported downed trees.  With travel hazardous and traffic signals non-functioning Gromack extended the emergency order restricting travel until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Gromack said the streets needed to be cleared of debris and highway crews are working on that.  He said Clarkstown is currently in an emergency situation and only emergency services should be on the roadways.

“I think the good news is this was not a flooding storm,” said Gromack, adding the focus is restoring power and downed trees that blocked roads and damaged houses.

About 200,000 Orange & Rockland customers throughout their territory are without power and about 75,000 of them are in Rockland County.  O&R has advised customers that restoration could take seven to 12 days.
