Jaffee Signs Letter Urging Reduced Gun Violence

Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee and 62 other New York State Legislators signed a letter state Senate and Assembly leadership calling for the passing of a plan to reduce gun violence.

Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee (D-Suffern) joined with 62 other state legislators in signing a letter to Senate and Assembly leadership calling for action to reduce gun violence.

The letter is a repsonse to the shootings that left 26 people dead, 20 of them children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.

The letter calls for the passage of a plan including the following measures, all endorsed by New Yorkers Against Gun Violence and the Violence Policy Center:

  • Require universal background checks on the sale of all guns
  • Strengthen assault weapons ban
  • Strengthen high capacity ammunition magazine ban
  • Require microstamping of guns to help law enforcement solve gun crimes
  • Require gun licenses to be renewed every five years
  • Improve gun dealer regulations
  • Regulation of ammunition sales
  • Limit personal gun purchases to one a month

"Now is the time to strengthen our resolve," Jaffee said. "We in government must join together to enact stronger, sensible gun laws that will protect our communities and our children from these horrific acts of violence. There is nothing more important. We owe it to our precious children, to their families, to their teachers, to ourselves as a nation and a civilized society."

Jafeee is a member of the New York chapter of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns (SLAIG).

A copy of the letter is attached to this report.

Nyack ...still waiting to hear you explain what the NFA is(in your mind anyway) and, let me know where you came up with that Quote ...I'd like to see the Forum that came from. Quote "owning a semi-automatic weapon is also a privilege " This must be a Nyack Resident original thought because, I've never seen it on any ATF memos or State Laws .....----------------------------------------------------------------- Nyack Resident 2:34 pm on Saturday, December 29, 2012 owning a semi-automatic weapon is also a privilege, not a right. "NY State is not a State that recognizes ownership of NFA Firearms, therefore all semi-automatic firearms (rifles, shotguns, and pistols) would be illegal in NY State."

Nyack Why don't we look at where we got are gun controls law ideas from good old germany Senator Dodd requested a copy of the nazi gun laws from I believe nuremburg trials. The german government said their gun laws were for their own safety and stop crime, right total BS They used those same laws to find out who owned firearms and which ones they had and where to find them at. First they took their arms away then took their remaining rights away sent them to camps and murdered them. Please remember one clear undeniable fact everything hilter did that POS was 100 percent LAWFUL because of nazi laws enacted!!!

What SDFreeman says is true ..Sen Dodd worked on the Trials and had a copy of the Nazi Firearm Laws translated for his use on his 1968 Gun Control Act --- how we could base anything in America on a Nazi Law is beyond me but , it's true.
