Community service organization honored by Rockland County legislators

Rockland County Legislators recognized Dimitri Vailakis, Amilinda Rivera, and Mia Rivera for their fundraising efforts on behalf of a veterans housing project in Tappan. On Tuesday evening, Legislators  John Murphy and Michael Grant recognized Vailakis and Rivera, both 11 years old, and nine-year-old Rivera for contributing the proceeds of their annual autumn flower sale to Homes for Heroes, an eight-unit residential project that will house disabled and displaced veterans on the grounds of the former Camp Shanks.

“I am touched that they have chosen Homes for Heroes as the recipient of their efforts this year,” said Legislator Murphy, who is the president of the not-for-profit agency sponsoring the residential project.  “It shows me that they revere our servicemen and women and have a special place for them in their young hearts and an understanding of the need to support our 'wounded warriors'."

Murphy and Grant also recognized Catholic Community Services of Rockland (CCSR) for its community work. The Haverstraw-based not-for-profit agency provides emergency food supplies and case management services to the county's needy.  Chairwoman of the Legislature Harriet Cornell presented a proclamation to Martha Robles, CCSR executive director.

“CCSR stays true to its mission,” said Grant. “The agency continues to provide meal programs, case management and counseling services, eviction prevention and much more to our citizens in crisis. By the end of this year, the agency will have served over 115,000 meals and 1,500 food pantry clients.”

The recognition coincided with “World Food Day,” a global effort to bring awareness to hunger and poverty.
