Lowey Issues Statement On School Shooting

Mass shooting described as "senseless and heartbreaking"

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) today issued the following statement on today’s mass shooting at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school:

“Today’s horrific act of violence in is senseless and heartbreaking.  There are no words to express the profound grief we all feel at the loss of so many, especially young children.  My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their friends and family and the entire Newtown community.

“We cannot tolerate mass shootings as a mere inconvenience or a normal part of our everyday lives.  Easy availability of the deadliest weapons to the most dangerous people has cost countless lives and caused immeasurable suffering, never more so than today.   Our expressions of sympathy must be matched with concrete actions to stop gun violence.”

How many more times does this sort of thing have to happen before the people of this country finally stand up to the tyranny of the NRA and enact rational gun control? How are the NRA going to rationalize this latest shooting, are they going to insist that it wouldn't have happened if only the ten-year-olds in this school had been allowed to carry firearms? There is no reason why anybody needs to own an automatic rifle, with a 30-round magazine, to hunt deer. Anybody who needs that many bullets to kill a deer isn't a good enough shot to be hunting in the first place. There is also no reason why anybody needs an automatic pistol with a 15-round magazine for self-protection. The only purpose those sorts of weapons serve is to make it easier and quicker to kill a lot of people. Enough is enough, already!

I agree with you Robert, but don't count on anyone standing up to the lobbyists, whether they be the NRA, the banks or insurance companies, or the public unions. They and our career politicians are tied at the hip and entrenched in our system. Besides, a gun control law as you have suggested would be about as easy to enforce as alcohol prohibition was. I don't see any way to prevent these horrific acts by deranged individuals. Look at history and the world around you. Violence is part of our human nature.

Keep in mind these are not "automatic" firearms they are semi-automatic. They media easily scares people because these civilian legal firearms are based on the automatic versions used by the military and law enforcement. People are far more afraid of a M4 than an M1 for this exact reason.

"Keep in mind these are not "automatic" firearms they are semi-automatic." That's nothing more than clouding the issue with semantics. When I was younger, and was taught by the military how to to shoot a 9mm Beretta, we always referred to it as an "automatic pistol". Now I suppose they call it something else, "self-loading", or "semi-automatic", or something like that. I don't bother keep up with all the constant changes in firearms jargon. The real point, that you insist upon ignoring with you hair-splitting semantics, is that nobody NEEDS a weapon like that for self-protection. Anybody who needs 15 rounds for self-defense probably shouldn't be carrying a gun in the first place, because they're obviously a bad shot, and all they're going to do is spray a lot of bullets all over the place at random, and probably hit some innocent bystanders. There's only one reason for the existence of weapons such as those, and that is to enable somebody to kill as many people as quickly and easily as possible.

Dear Robert, if a term of life imprisonment or even death is insufficient to prevent murder why would any penalty deter possession of a gun?
