Participate In Nanuet’s Future

Hear the ideas proposed to make Nanuet a destination and turn it into a cohesive hamlet center and change Route 59 to a more easily traversed area.

In the spring and summer Nanuet residents and business owners met with Clarkstown officials and planning consultants to discuss ways to change Nanuet and the Route 59 corridor for the better.  Town planners and consultants gathered that input and created four categories of opportunities, strengths, existing challenges and existing weaknesses. Those comments and recommendations will be shared with the community on Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Nanuet High School Auditorium.

The session will recap thoughts and criticisms about travel along Route 59 and how to make it easier for pedestrians, bikers and motorists. Suggestions were made to improve connections between shopping centers and make it simpler to move between them. The need to better time traffic signals to decrease congestion and create more pocket parks and plant additional trees were other recommendations.

The list for hamlet center upgrades ranged from developing consistent architectural design standards and improving pedestrian access between the train station and Main Street.  Shortcomings noted were limited parking areas, an absence of mixed-use zoning, existing light industrial/office zoning and lack of a town center atmosphere.

Clarkstown Principal Planner Joe Simoes said the discussion would be about new zoning based on the issues brought up community members.

“We’re going to basically be expanding on all those points,” said Simoes.

After each section is presented, Simoes said the public would get a chance to speak and discuss if items should be added or deleted.

“This is the part of the process we ask did we get it right,” he said.

Simoes said there will be a framework of new zoning presented and it will differ from zoning implemented in Clarkstown’s other hamlets because Nanuet has a train station. While the concept for Nanuet’s Main Street may be similar in some respects to South Main Street in New City, the treatment would be different around the train station.

After the meeting, the consultants will draft laws to amend the current zoning and then there will be at least two more public meetings. Any changes to the zoning require approval by the town board, town planning board and county planning board.
