Rockland Kicks Off New Gun Safety Effort

Free firearms cable locks distributed through Sheriff's Department, County Clerk.

Rockland County is set to kick off a new gun safety program on Friday, with free firearms cable locks being distributed through the Rockland County Sheriff's Department and the County Clerk's Office.

The effort is a result of a measure approved by the Rockland County Legislature.

Here's how the program is set to work:

  • Cable locks will be provided to Rockland County residents free-of-charge, on a first come, first received basis at the Sheriff's Headquarters, 55 New Hempstead Road, New City. As about the cable locks at the police desk at the main entrance.
  • There is a limit of four cable locks per household.
  • Persons seeking locks will be asked to complete a voluntary basic information form. If a person chooses not to complete the form, they must display visual proof of Rockland County residency to the issuing officer.
  • If requested and if time permits, the issuing officer will explain how to install the cable lock on a firearm.

The Rockland County Clerk’s Office at the Rockland County Courthouse in New City has also been provided with cable lock devices. They will be participating in this distribution program as pistol permit amendment applications are processed at that office.

thats nice. did you see how they work? it has a cable, that i guess most of the time goes through the action, requiring the action to be open. now your springs are under tension. bad idea for long term storage. .springs should be ''relaxed'' for storage.

Sorry Brother, but that is incorrect. Spring tension degrades with use. A coiled spring ie: slide rearward, loaded mag, firing pin etc, doesn't actually degrade. Total myth. However, you can always just release the slide leaving just that bit open on the cable. Also works well with revolvers as you cannot close the cylinder. All responsible gun owners should have a safe or lock box anyway. End of sermon.
