Sunday: Wave a Flag for Nanuet Marine

Stand by the side of the road and wave an American flag as this Nanuet resident travels to Albany to be sworn in as a U.S. Marine

Nanuet's got a lot to be proud of. On Sunday, July 8, Thomas Hanney of Nanuet is heading to Albany to be sworn in as a United States Marine.

He'll be leaving from his home on Edsall Avenue with his parents at 10:40 a.m. The route they'll take is to Sherwood Drive and getting on the Thruway from there.

The Hanneys are asking the community to step out to the curb with an American flag, good luck sign or just a wave to show support.

Tommy is already a hometown hero for his leadership as the captain and quarterback of the Nanuet football team in 2009 when Nanuet made it to the NYS championship game, according to the Hanneys.

Congrats, Tom Hanney, on your excellent choice, one you, your parents, family and friends will ALWAYS be proud of. I was the Marine Corps Recruiter in Nyack (Nyack Village Hall) early 1950;s before I left for Korea and retired with over 22 years service. Make a career out of it, time passes quickly, but the excitement never ends.

On behalf of Tommy Shane Hanney, my wife and I would like to send a big THANK YOU to everyone in the Nanuet community, along with our dear friends and great neighbors on Edsall and Sherwood Avenues. To see the streets lined with people holding American flags cheering, showing there support as we drove away with our son was a scene that will be etched in our memories forever. We thank you again for your support and patriotism at such an emotional time in our lives. Marykay and Tom Hanney

What a great display of patriotism and a fitting sendoff to Tommy. This is what "community" is all about. He WILL make Nanuet and his Country proud as he continues the fight for our freedom. Thanks to all who came out on a sunny Sunday morning to wish him well as he begins his new journey in life.
