Tuesday: Hearing on New Tappan Zee Bridge

State authorities to present plans, field questions

Questions about the environmental impact of the new, $5.2 billion Tappan Zee Bridge, what properties it will affect and more will be addressed at a public hearing this Tuesday at the Palisades Center in West Nyack.

An open house will run from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and two presentations will be held at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. It will be held on the fourth floor community rooms of , 1000 Palisades Center Drive.

The evening will focus on the recently-released , one of the most comprehensive documents on the new span released since the federal government .

The DEIS spotlights a number of issues, like , how the Hudson River's ecology would be impacted and more.

Another centerpiece of the night will likely be the issue of mass transit—officials are eschewing bus and rail, as train infrastructure would up the cost to around $16 billion. Officials have noted mass transit could be layered on in later years.

It's a decision that has , business owners and local politicians, who have been calling for a mass transit connection to Westchester and the metropolitan area for years.

The plan for a new bridge has also raised questions about the old one—last week, New York State governor Andrew Cuomo said the span, which costs about $50 million each year in maintanace, could be .
