Celebration of the Arts

Nanuet Public Library hosts Nanuet School District's Celebration of the Arts display.

The Nanuet School District strives to keep the arts alive with its annual "Celebration of the Arts" exhibit.

On Sunday, May 22, the Nanuet Public Library hosted the opening reception for this exhibit. Over 1,000 pieces of Fine, Technical and Practical art created by grades K-12 filled the space and will remain on display for the next two weeks.

“Art is a very important part of the curriculum” encouraging “problem solving and creativity,” said Laura Nicholls, Art Educator and Director, Department of Fine and Practical Arts. The exhibit contains “representative examples of student work.” Each family with student work on display received a personal invitation to the opening reception.

A popular display at the opening was the two large fish created by Highview’s entire third and fourth grade classes under the guidance of Art Educator, Kodi Tidd. The project, inspired by Simon’s Hook: A Story about Teases and Put Downs by Karen Gedig Burnett, sends the message “don’t get caught by bullies” said Tidd.

After reading the book, each individual student created their own fish, which was then used to create a school of fish that took the form of one large fish. This display represents the unity between the students and the staff against bulling which is a very powerful statement.

"This is an opportunity for children in Nanuet Public School’s to highlight their creativity” said Nicholls.
