Major Damage To Nanuet FRC Gym From Sandy

The decision on what will happen next is up to the gym's owner, NY Foundling Foundation

Sandy caused a lot of damage to the county and parts of Nanuet were also hit. Unfortunately, the Nanuet Family Resource Gym on Convent Road—formerly St. Agatha Gym—was one of Sandy's casualties.

"There's a large hole in the roof. Water came in and the gym floor is wrecked," said RoseAnn Mercado, Nanuet FRC director. "Also, that hole is where we put the new heating unit."

She's not sure yet what's going to happen because the gym is owned by the NY Foundling "so it's up to them and their insurance on what to do."

"The windows are blown in and now all the money the family resource center received from groups that paid to use the gym is gone," added Mercado.

Back in August, Christina Maher of Nanuet Girl Scout Troop 40504 was redoing the entryway of the Family Resource Center gym for her gold award. At that time she, with help from family and friends, had painted the walls, the bathrooms and their stalls, stained and varnished the doors.

Unfortunately, parts of her project was destroyed by Sandy as well.

"I feel awful for her. She worked so hard on her gold award project," said Mercado.
