Miller Student Goes Green for Green

Aidan McCauley goes green and raises money for George Miller.

Aidan McCauley, a second grader at George Miller Elementary School was reading a Capri Sun juice box one day and something caught his eye.  On the back of the box, Capri Sun has instructions about earning money for your school by recycling the empty pouches.  This initiative is a collaboration between Capri Sun and Terracycle.

"I started bringing home my empty pouches then I asked my classmates for theirs. My teacher, Mrs. Eng, wanted to know why I was collecting garbage and I told her I was recycling the pouches to get get money for the school," said Aidan.

Needless to say Ann Eng loved the idea and encouraged Aidan to keep recycling. She engaged the class to make posters about the Capri Sun initiative. Then Aidan along with students from his class began to spread the word to other classes by making presentations about what they were doing.

At the end of each week, all the classes would send their pouches to Aidan and he would bring home a huge bag filled with empty Capri Sun pouches. After about a month, Aidan collected 1,478 puches.

He boxed the pouches up and shipped them off to Terracycle.

Terracycle, in return, will cut a check to George Miller.

"I started this late in the year. Next year I will start in the beginning of the school year and I think we can raise a lot of money for the school," said McCauley.
