Applications for enrollment already received and classroom space allocated at JCC

The Planning Committee of the Rockland Jewish Academy (RJA) announced on Monday that the school is moving from an idea to a reality with 60 students already applying for enrollment.  RJA Spokesperson Andy Blau said they started the process of applying for a provisional charter from the New York State Education Department and student applications have already been received. The school will offer classes for PreK through fifth grade and be overseen by the Solomon Schechter School of Westchester.

“More than 60 children have already applied for enrollment this September and we expect that number to grow over the next few months,” said Blau.  “We expect somewhere between 60-80 students at the launch of the school.”

RJA will be located on the Rockland Jewish Community Center Campus (JCC) in West Nyack.  It will be housed in approximately 11,550 square feet of classroom space with room for expansion.  Student will have full access to the gym and other facilities at the JCC.  The school will lease the space from the JCC at market rates.

Blau said classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The committee is working with the JCC on options for early drop-off and extended day programs. The process to apply and receive approval for a provisional charter typically takes three to four months.

The supporters of the RJA hope it will fill the gap when the Reuben Gittelman Hebrew Day School closes in June. The New City-based school has classes from PreK through eighth grade.  ASHAR (Adolph H. Schreiber Hebrew Academy of Rockland County) of Monsey, a yeshiva day school for girls and boys, is the expected purchaser of the RGHDS building and property.
