Nanuet School, Library Budgets, Trustee Seats Up For Vote

Nanuet School District residents head to the polls on Tuesday to cast votes on the proposed school and library budgets and elect trustees to the school and library boards. The proposed school budget for next year is $64,599,768, which represents a 3.33 percent increase in the budget from last year and a 1.09 increase in the tax levy.

The proposed 2013-2014 school budget would cut:

•  8.8 teaching positions
•  4.8 teaching assistant positions
•  2.2 custodial positions
•  1.2 clerical positions
•  2.0 monitor positions

It also eliminates all freshmen and most assistant varsity coaching positions. The district’s annual $500,000 capital fund expenditure will be earmarked toward school security upgrades. Read more about the school budget here

The library’s $2,772,850 proposed budget for next year, increases $318,850 from the current budget. The budget includes extending the tax cap by about $225,000, or between 10 and 11 percent. Learn more about the library budget here.

There are two open seats on the Nanuet School Board.  Incumbents Karen Franchino and Ron Hansen are seeking re-election. Scott Walters is running for the board for the seventh time.

Incumbent Nanuet Library Trustee Paul Corriel is facing Brian Booth, a first time challenger.

Franchino is completing her eighth, three-year term on the school board and Hansen, currently the board vice president, is seeking his fourth full three-year term. Library Board of Trustees Vice President Corriel is running for his fourth, five-year term.

The poll at Nanuet High School will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. There is no change to the polling location for the school and library budget votes as a result of the Board of Elections announcement that sites would change for the September general primary and November general election.

The school board is meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to award tenure to staff and will receive the unofficial results of the vote after the poll closes at 9 p.m. Anyone with questions should contact the School District Clerk’s Office at 845-627-9888.
