Nanuet Students Make Music For Recognition Reception

The reception honored the efforts of the school board and the PTA last night

The library at the Nanuet High School is usually a quiet studying place, but last night it was filled with music. Students from the elementary, middle and high school gave a great show to an audience during the Recognition Reception for the PTA and School Board.

Before performing, the board and PTA members received gifts from the students and PTA Council President Christine Camillieri presented a plaque to the Board. The plaque reads:

"Nanuet Public Schools Board of Education: In recognition of your dedicated service to our children and the community – Nanuet PTA."

In one of the six squares below, all the Board members' names were engraved as was the last two years. Board Vice President Anne Byrne accepted the plaque and said a few words of appreciation.

"Nanuet's great school district and it's great because we all work together. If it weren't for the parents, PTA, the staff and the students … we (the Board) wouldn't be as good as we are," said Byrne. "So I want to thank you very much for recognizing us."

After a few quick speeches from Camillieri, a few board members and Music Teacher Elaine Royal, the students gave their musical performances.

Royal introduced the three groups displaying their musical talent on behalf of the Nanuet music department. First up were the Middle School Violas conducted by Kathy Rife. Then Karen Liebert's third grade class sang "Music, Music, Music."

To conclude everything, Senior Kevin Quill, a trumpeter from the High School band performed a Concerto for trumpet and orchestra. He also represents the district as a New York All State Musician.

Two viola players were John Tamigi and Branden Fernandez, both sixth graders that have been playing this string instrument for about three years now.

"I just think it's fun and definitely worth it," said Tamigi about playing the Viola. He also plays the guitar.

"I like it because it's good for my education," said Fernandez.

"I like it because you sing for all the people and keep them entertained," said Ksenia Galitzine, one of the third-grade singers.

"It was happy for the people," said Valerie Portelle, Galitzine's classmate and fellow singer.

Afterward, Royal reflected on the great musical performances.

"They're fabulous. I'm so pleased so many of them were able to come tonight," she said. Royal was referring to the fact that the students were not required to participate tonight and appreciated the parents that found time to come with their children. "Their enthusiasm is what keeps me going."

Highview Elementary Principal Barbara Auriemma was also proud of her students.

"Of course all of our children are special. Our music department is well known for their accomplishments," Auriemma said. "We're very proud of our students and our musically-inclined students."

All parents, children, staff and board members were smiling and captivated during all three performances. A round of applause please.
