Nanuet Superintendent Plans To Restore Cut Music Position
A music teacher position was one of 9.6 positions proposed for elimination in next year's budget
At Tuesday night’s Nanuet School Board meeting, Superintendent Mark McNeill announced the district recently received unexpected additional state aid, which he intends to use partly to restore a music teacher position that was scheduled to be eliminated.
The district received an additional $260,000 in state aid, McNeill said Tuesday night.
“We weren’t really anticipating this $260,000,” he said. “We’re very happy to receive it.”
At a meeting last month, McNeill proposed staffing cuts of 9.6 full time equivalent teaching positions, which included one music teacher. At a later board meeting in March, the public came out in support Alex Fung, the music teacher whose position was proposed for elimination. At the meeting, support for Fung came from a letter from an elementary school student, as well as vocal support from a parent.
“We had identified a number of positions that were to be eliminated in next year’s budget,” McNeill said. “One of them, the music position, I’m putting back in [to the budget].”
McNeill added that they will work the state aid into the budget and at the next board meeting he will go into further details about the numbers and what it might mean for the voters.
