PARP Rounds up the Month with Magic Jim: Reading is Cool

This was the last PARP event of the month

March was reading month and the Elementary PTA put together several great events to tie into reading as part of their PARP program, Parents as Reading Partners.

They ended the entire program with a visit from Magic Jim, or Jim Vagias. Despite the rain, the turn out was great.

“This was a great way to end PARP,” said Michelle Mazzaro, PTA president. “I’m so happy that all these kids could come out tonight.

“I love coming back to Nanuet,” said Vagias. “The kids are always wonderful as well as the faculty and administration. I want to give particular thanks to Melissa Lipson and Kate Bento for their support.”

Bento, psychologist at Miller Elementary, and Lipson, guidance counselor at Highview Elementary, were key in organizing this magic show. Magic Jim incorporated reading into his act and his interactive skits kept the crowd laughing throughout.

“I liked when the rings switched boxes,” said Maggie McElhennon.

“I liked when the guy (Magic Jim) popped his (Rudy’s) head because it was funny. He (Rudy) kept watching TV and he should have read,” said Madison Vanderploeg.

“I really liked it,” said Missy, Madison’s mother. “It was a nice end to the PARP program and it taught them how to learn from books and he encouraged them to be inspired by reading.”
