Fourth Annual Rockland County Tech Wars Robotics Competition

Students from six schools competed

The fourth annual Rockland County Tech Wars Robotics Competition took place Friday night in the fieldhouse at Rockland Community College.

Students competed from six schools: Nanuet High School, Clarkstown North High School, Clarkstown South High School, Rockland BOCES, Felix Festa Middle School and Fieldstone Middle School in Thiells.

Some groups built their robots in classes and others in after school clubs. The teams competed in four competitions: soccer, sumo, drag racing and obstacle course.

The team from the Nanuet Technology Club won the soccer competition. Club President Michael Curry said the club has 15-20 members, and while all weren’t there Friday night, all did have a hand in designing and building the robots, which they’ve worked on since September.

Their robot had an arm that clamped down, allowing the robot to hold the soccer ball in close while blocking the other robots from getting to it. Curry said they originally planned on giving the robot a claw in front that close horizontally, but decided on the arm because it could better hold the soccer ball.

The Nanuet Robotics II class group won the sumo competition.
