Salvation Army and Target Give Rockland Kids Back-To-School Shopping Spree

Each child is from a low-income family in the county and received $85 for clothes

The Salvation Army and Target Corporate Headquarters teamed up together to do a back to school shopping spree with 30 children from Rockland County.  The “Target Back to School Spree” took place 9 a.m. on Tuesday at Target in the Spring Valley Market Place.

30 children from low-income families around Rockland received an $85 Target gift card and a Salvation Army Volunteer to escort them around the store.

“That’s really what the Salvation Army is all about, being in the community and really making a difference,” said Jill Muhs of the Salvation Army. “This is a great opportunity to get out there and show these kids that there are people out there who care about them. It’s also a great opportunity to see some of their smiling faces.”

The kids browsed through the racks for new school clothes for the fall.

“For me as a parent myself it’s really great to see the relief on some of the parents faces,” said Salvation Army Captain Jodi Lloyd. “The parents get a large back to school list and sometimes there is a lot of pressure on them. This is also a confidence thing for the kids. They get to pick out some new supplies and clothes so they can get back to school confidently.”

“The Salvation Army is also having another event in late August where the local Spring Valley Salvation Army is doing another back to school event with Target that will involve 70 Children from Rockland County low-income families,” said Muhs. “Again we will assist each child with $80 towards back to school clothing. This is funded by our local outreach Christmas in July efforts.”
