Students Compete in Barr Blood Drive

Lange's fifth grade class won with 15 donors

Since children cannot donate blood, it’s a challenge to teach them the importance of doing so. To get them motivated, the 5th graders at Barr Middle School were given a challenge: recruit as many donors as possible for a blood drive. The winning class got a special treat.

“The class that gets the most people to donate gets an ice pop party,” said Julia Conese, a fifth-grader in Stacey Lange’s winning class.

The blood drive was March 30 at Barr and Lange’s class brought in 15 total donors.

“It’s great that these fifth-graders have come to volunteer and help out,” said Lange of her little helpers. The students stood at the main entrance of Barr directing donors, made signs to show the way and helped out with small tasks around the cafeteria where the blood drive was.

“I brought in three donors,” said Daniel Cavazzi who was in the second place homeroom class of Erik Erichsen.

The students also wrote thank-you notes for the donors as well.

“I donate every time there’s a blood mobile at the school,” said Nanuet Schools Superintendent Mark McNeill. “The last time I donated was at the High School in November, but I want to be donating more often. This is a good ting to do.”

“This is the first time I’ve donated blood,” said Heather Schucker. “It’s easier than I thought it would be and it’s for a good cause. The kids are doing a good job today.”
