Support NHS Student Scholarships: Donate Today

Today is the last day to donate used clothing and home goods to help out VAASA and SADD

The students at Nanuet High School have big hearts this year and are giving back to those in need. A&E clothing corporations collects donated used clothes and other goods to give to those that are less fortunate. Tomorrow morning, they will be paying Nanuet HS a visit to pick up the donations collected by the students of VAASA and SADD.

VAASA is Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse and SADD is Students Against Destructive Decisions. Marie Bogdanowich is the director of both groups and is from RCADD, Rockland Council on Alcoholism and other Drug Dependence.

"Please help VAASA and SADD with our unique fundraising event," said Bogdanowich. She added that the items collected by the students for A&E are sent to places across the nation, overseas and to local charities.

Located in New Jersey, A&E collects unwanted, gently used and clean:

  • Men's, ladies' and children's clothing
  • Accessories: shoes, belts, hats, scarves, gloves, ties, pocketbooks
  • Childrens goods: baby accessories, stuffed animals, toys
  • Home goods: bed linens, towels, curtains

The groups also get something in return as well.

"By donating these items, we will profit financially as we will be paid cash by the pound donated. In addition, we will save landfill space, thus helping towns and municipalities to save money and resources," said Bogdanowich.

Alicia Rynkiewicz from A&E is happy about the school's donation.

"We (A&E) will be paying (Nanuet High) school 15 cents per pound, and if (the) collection is 5,000 lbs and over (they) will also get an additional $100 bonus," said Rynkiewicz. "The check will be sent out ... within 7-10 days after pick up date."

Bogdanowich also has a goal with the money earned.

"Our goal is to earn money annually so that we can start a scholarship that would be awarded to an applicant who has chosen an alcohol, drug and tobacco free lifestyle," said Bogdanowich. "SADD and VAASA are looking forward to creating a scholarship application."

This fundraiser will occur again next year as well. If you have any questions or would like to donate please feel free to place items in the bins located in Marie Bogdanowich's office—Room 167 across from the cafeteria.
