Breit, Parahus Named Rockland's Top Winter Sports Senior Athletes

Nanuet wrestler Dan Breit and Albertus Magnus girls basketball player Maeve Parahus were chosen from among nominees by the athletic directors of Rockland County's 11 high schools.

 

Nanuet senior Dan Breit excelled on the wrestling mat while Albertus Magnus senior Maeve Parahus did her work on the basketball court.

They played their sports well enough to be chosen the top winter sports athletes in Rockland County for the 2012-13 season.

The selection committee chooses the top male and female athlete in the county for each season from a list of nominees submitted by the athletic directors of Rockland County's 11 high schools. Each AD submits a male and female athlete for each season. All 66 nominees are invited to the annual awards breakfast Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Pearl River Elks Club. 

The selection committee includes retired Suffern AD Bob Buono, retired Albertus Magnus and Pearl River AD Tom Collins, retired Nanuet football and wrestling coach Rich Conklin, retired Pearl River AD Tom Doherty, Commissioner of Rockland County Officials Jimmy Kane and former Nanuet AD Judy Slutsky.

The Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame Committee, Rockland County Sports Coaches Association and Crown Trophy of Pearl River sponsor the awards, given three times a year for over 30 years.

Breit became only the third wrestler from Rockland County to ever win a championship at the Eastern States Tournament. He won the Section 1 Division II championship at 220 pounds and took foruth in the state.

Breit went 39-2, winning the Rockland County Championship and earning first-team all-section and all-county honors. He helped Nanuet win the Section 1 Division II team championship. 

With all his success in wrestling, Breit will play football in college at Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

Parahus had already signed to play college basketball at Division I Manhattan College before a senior season during which she averaged 21 points, seven rebounds and two blocks per game. She led Albertus Magnus to an appearance in the Section 1 Class A championship game and was named first-team all state by the New York State Sportswriter's Association.

Parahus finished her career with 1,220 career points, second in school history and 21st all-time in Rockland County.

  • Clarkstown North: Colby Kash (Wrestling) and Lorraine Santiago (Indoor Track)
  • Clarkstown South: Chris Gugliemo (Indoor Track) and Allison Haugh (Basketball)
  • Nanuet: Dan Breit (Wrestling) and Dana Rohan (Basketball)
  • North Rockland: Brandon Shields (Swimming) and Alex Bertolino (Basketball)
  • Nyack: Dashawn Rodriguez (Basketball) and Lindsey Sundvik (Basketball)
  • Pearl River: Tom Davis (Basketball) and Amanda DeCourcey (Basketball)
  • Ramapo: Tyler Going (Wrestling) and Kiah Armstrong (Basketball)
  • Spring Valley: Fern Durand (Basketball) and Darian Garner (Indoor Track)
  • Suffern: A.J. Longabucco (Skiing) and Sarah Adler (Indoor Track)
  • Tappan Zee: Desmond Djekovic (Wrestling) and Kylie McGivney (Gymnastics)
